Reports to:  Managing Director, BECMA Community Investments

Location: Hybrid withMassachusetts (Boston Headquarters)

Salary: $70,000

Start Date: Fall 2024

Organizational Summary 

The Black Economic Council of Massachusetts (BECMA)’s mission is to drive economic equity and prosperity for Massachusetts to achieve inclusive growth through advocacy, programming, and strategic partnerships that enable Black-owned businesses and Black communities to thrive. 

BECMA’s work is centered around our 4 pillars for closing the racial wealth gap in MA: 

  • Entrepreneurship: Nurture startups and support existing entrepreneurs by providing them with access to affordable and adequate capital to launch and scale their firms.
  • Placement: Focus on workforce development, particularly in Massachusetts’ high-growth industries, and placing Black professionals in decision-making roles in management and board positions.
  • Commerce: Support Black business owners in selling their goods and services while helping ally buyers to meet their supplier diversity or ESG goals. 
  • Ownership: Increase business owners’ equity stake in their enterprises.

As a non-profit, BECMA has grown from a concept/start-up to a $5 million+ organization. Part of the fundraising and communication strategy includes the BECMA Community Investments, an entity with a dotted line reporting to the President & CEO. 

Our members and stakeholders include Black business owners as well as partner organizations such as nonprofits, corporations, foundations, hospitals, universities, venture capital firms, insurance companies, and government agencies. BECMA members and stakeholders come from diverse backgrounds, united by the goal of building Black wealth in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We host events throughout the year, and we also host premier annual events including BECMA’s Mass Black Expo and Annual Meeting.

Who You Are

We are seeking a dynamic and highly organized Operations Manager to support the Managing Director. What You’ll Do

Manage Business Pipeline:

  • Identify potential investment opportunities from BECMA Membership, networking, and partnerships with community organizations
  • Plan, organize, and execute events and informational sessions to engage with potential investment opportunities and partners
  • Oversee the application process including initial screening, documentation collection, and coordination of review meetings
  • Maintain and update the business pipeline database, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information on all potential investments.
  • Maintain and update the fundraising pipeline, ensuring all potential donors and fundraising opportunities are accurately tracked and managed
  • Track all outreach activities to potential donors, including meetings, and follow-ups, ensuring no opportunities are missed
  • Work with the Managing Director to ensure regular communication with existing and potential donors, including newsletters and thank-you notes
  • Assist in planning and executing fundraising events, including virtual and in-person donor meetings and networking events

Due Diligence: 

  • Conduct initial screenings of potential investment opportunities to assess alignment with the BCI’s mission and investment criteria
  • Identify and evaluate potential risks associated with each investment opportunity
  • With the Managing Director, prepare due diligence reports summarizing findings, insights, and recommendations for the investment committee

Operational Efficiency

  • Assist the Managing Director in implementing the fund’s strategic initiatives and ensure alignment with overall objectives
  • Streamline operations and processes to enhance productivity and efficiency within the organization
  • Optimize the teams’ schedule, prioritizing activities that align with strategic goals and objectives
  • Prepare agendas, presentations, and reports for meetings with stakeholders, board members, and potential investors

What You’ll Need 

  • 2+ years of experience in a project manager, operational or finance role.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Organized and Detail-Oriented: Maintains a structured approach to managing tasks and projects, ensuring all details are reviewed and accurately documented.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • A deep commitment to advancing economic equity and supporting Black-owned businesses.
  • A proactive and adaptable mindset, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

What You’ll Get 

This is a full-time position with some required travel to the office located at the BECMA headquarters in Boston, MA. Travel to visit current and prospective members and to attend events held throughout the state is also expected. The salary for this position is $70,000 and is commensurate with lived and professional experiences.
